Applewood
Applewood is a census-designated place of about 7,800 residents on 2,871 acres, roughly ten miles west of downtown Denver. It is bordered by Wheat Ridge to the northeast, Lakewood to the southeast and South Table Mountain to the west, and it carries a Golden 80401 mailing address even though it sits outside the city limits.
The name is also used loosely for adjacent Wheat Ridge and Lakewood streets in 80215 — Applewood Knolls, Applewood Grove and Applewood Hills — which share the same mid-century character. Haven & Co has represented sales along Foothill Road and Yank Street here.
Golf, parks and open space
Applewood Golf Course, a par-71 public course designed by J. Press Maxwell, opened in 1961 on West 32nd Avenue; the Trust for Public Land has worked to keep the land in open use. The Club at Rolling Hills, a private 18-hole course also by Maxwell, was built in 1967 on West 26th Avenue.
The Prospect Recreation and Park District maintains Applewood Park, Maple Grove Park with its historic Arbor House, and neighborhood parks in nearby Fairmount. South Table Mountain’s trails begin a short distance west.
Shopping and the Denver West corridor
Applewood Village Shopping Center anchors everyday retail on Youngfield Street, while the Denver West office park and Colorado Mills sit just south along I-70 and US-6. The Clear Creek Trail and the Wheat Ridge Greenbelt are minutes to the east.
Homes and housing character
- Predominantly single-family homes from the 1950s through the 1970s — brick ranches, split-levels and a notable stock of mid-century modern designs — on lots that are larger than most metro-Denver subdivisions, with mature trees and mountain views from higher streets.
- Some blocks along Foothill Road and toward South Table Mountain approach half an acre; newer custom homes and remodels are increasingly common.
